Our curriculum is based on the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which is a comprehensive, thematic, and creative curriculum for primary education. This program is designed to provide an engaging and inquiry-based learning experience for students. Through the IPC, students learn about a range of topics, from science and technology to the arts and humanities.

International Primary Curriculum (IPC)

Goals and Objectives:

The international program at Tonkla School aims to achieve the following goals:

  1. Foster bilingualism and multilingualism: Our program aims to help students develop proficiency in English and Thai languages through a curriculum that teaches English at an 80% ratio and Thai at a 20% ratio.
  2. Provide a comprehensive curriculum: Our program follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which is designed to provide a thematic and inquiry-based learning experience for students. This helps them develop a range of knowledge and skills across different subjects, such as science, technology, the arts, and humanities.
  3. Build a strong foundation: Our kindergarten program follows the HEI Curriculum, which focuses on building foundational skills in literacy, cognitive, physical, and social-emotional learning. This sets the stage for future academic and personal success.
  4. Foster holistic development: We believe in providing a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics. Our program focuses on developing students’ critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, creativity, empathy, respect, responsibility, and resilience.
  5. Encourage independent and lifelong learning: Our program aims to foster a love of learning and curiosity in students, helping them become independent and lifelong learners who are equipped to face the challenges of the future.
  6. Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment: We strive to create a learning environment that is supportive, inclusive, and nurturing. Our experienced and dedicated teachers work closely with students to help them achieve their full potential.

Overview

Building on the solid foundation of the Kindergarten experience, our primary department helps students transition to the next stages of their development as learners and as people. We continue to provide a nurturing and safe environment for all, as well as helping the students become accustomed to new habits and encouraging them to develop a greater sense of independence.

Why the IPC?

With the launch of the International Programme, Tonkla chose to use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) as it matches the school’s vision and ethos so closely. It is a modern curriculum that is internationally recognised and currently used in over 1000 schools in more than 90 countries. The IPC will help us achieve our goal of guiding our students to become best prepared for a rapidly-changing world. This can be done by addressing not only the learners’ academic needs, but also helping them develop a range of skills and characteristics that will provide them with lifelong benefits.

The IPC focuses on 3 different strands that work together to give the students a fully integrated learning experience.

International-Mindedness – Globally competent

A key part of the IPC, as its name suggests, is the International element. Teachers set specific International Learning Goals in lessons to help students become more aware not only of their local culture but also of other cultures and people. The aim is for students to understand that we all have similarities as well as differences and problems in one place can have an effect on people in other places. This should help the learners understand the importance of helping and communicating with others, not only in their local communities, but further afield, too. To support this, we plan field trips and communication with other children in different parts of the world via our successful penpal schemes. Once this awareness of other people, places and cultures is developed, we can then help the children to think about how they can get involved in communities and projects as globally competent citizens in ways that can benefit others and ultimately benefit us all.

Themed Units and Academic subjects

The IPC approaches learning in an integrated way. This means that learning is based around different Themed Units that can last between 3 and 6 weeks. Each unit covers a different engaging and modern theme or topic. During the unit students will study a range of subjects, such as Science, Geography, ICT and Computing, History, Health and Wellbeing and International Mindedness  but will use the same topic to do this and each subject has clear learning goals. Looking at the same topic from the perspective of different subjects makes the learning more meaningful for the children and shows them how the world is connected.

What is the teaching approach?

A progressive pedagogy

The IPC encourages teaching approaches that are engaging, student-centred, practical and grounded in evidence-based research. These focus on 4 main areas:

Brain-based Learning – using a variety of tasks to help knowledge be retained in the long-term memory.

Constructivism – using previous knowledge students construct new meaning about the world around them often by working together with others.

Experiential and Active Learning – using a variety of hands-on activities to engage students and ensure their brains are stimulated and active to make learning memorable.

Metacognition – thinking about thinking, learning about learning. Encouraging students to reflect on what they learned, how they learned, and how they could do better.

The IPC also includes learning goals which focus on helping develop the students as people. These include 8 important characteristics that will help the students to interact with other people in a variety of situations and become rounded, balanced, future-ready global citizens.

The Personal Learning Goals are included and referred to regularly in the IPC lessons so that through examples and practice, students should start to recognise and adopt these positive traits.
